The DataBoy cartridge consists of a double-sided printed circuit board with a plastic cover mounted on the component side. A DIP switch, connector, and label are placed on the reverse side of the board. The label serves the dual purpose of identifying the cartridge and covering the copper traces on the reverse side of the board.

The photos above show the original DataBoy cartridge which was designed to run on Game Boy Classic and Game Boy Color consoles. When Game Boy Advance (GBA) was introduced, the cartridge design was modified, as shown below, to enable it to run on GBA. The notches on the sides of the edge-connector were added to activate the GBA micro-switch which detects what type of cartridge is inserted. This modified cartridge will also run on the older Game Boy models.

GBA-compatible cartridge.
